Cell Tower Action Kit

This Cell Tower "Action Kit" offers an effective collection of informative, useful and active ways for citizens, faced with the fact of an exponential increase of cell towers and antennas in their communities, to inform themselves about the issue and launch affirmative action.

It's important that every municipality have a strong consultation policy which requires open and honest discussion with the City and concerned residents before any towers are sited. Without one, Industry Canada's policies apply, virtually no notification is given, and there is no need for public meetings.

At present,  there is little we can do to fight new installations, but this is one. Demand consultation by having a policy.

Increasingly, individuals and neighbourhoods in communities are rallying together to launch awareness campaigns, and influencing governments at the local level.

Join cell tower fight, your neighbourhood may be next

Muskoka, Ontario - Cottage Country

" . . . Right now, the way the legislation is drawn up, a tower can be put up any place, without a building permit or site plan agreement. It appears that big business can bully their way into our communities and do whatever they want, unless we object and vehemently oppose.

"We need your help to start making change. This issue won't go away. It may not be in your backyard today, but there's a good possibility that it may be in the works tomorrow.. The request is simple. It is not an objection to cell towers that is needed. It is an objection to the process of their placement that we must change.

"There is no established protocol that determines where towers can and cannot be placed. Presently, the process allows for the public to object, but the response back is that Safety Code 6 will be followed. Research around the world says that Safety Code 6 is inadequate, it is obsolete. I can only hope that the Rogers cell tower proposed on Lynx Lake Road is stopped and that an alternate site is chosen where it will not negatively impact on the residents. A precedent can be set here and now.

"If every person in our municipality alone contacted their municipal, provincial and federal elected representatives expressing concern and objection to the present process of allowing free rein to big business to place towers wherever they deem appropriate, we, the people, can make huge change. We only need to make ourselves heard loud and clear."

Approach your local council NOW.

or run for the off-grid hills

To date, 59 Municipal Councils, after being approached by their constituents, have officially asked the Liberal government for a moratorium or opt-out from the Wireless Smart Meter Program.

Local councils need to take steps to defend the health, safety and human rights of their constituents. If they haven't already done so, they need to represent the people in their ridings, and people need to speak up for their rights.

According to Bill 23-2008 of the British Columbia Public Health Act, section 83 (1), Section 83 (1), a municipality must take action when it learns of something that could be harmful to its residents. It must notify the Minister of Health or take immediate action.

We can't say it strongly enough: Approach local councils NOW, and demand safe neighbourhoods!
If you don't, the change we need won't happen.

Cell Towers and Antennas - Map (Canada)

antenna and provider information (updated)

"Where does the cell data come from? The first section of this cell tower FAQ describes in full where the raw data is obtained and how it is processed.

"The Loxcel Cell Tower Map presents up-to-date information on 16,000 cell sites and 110,000 antenna, representing all 32 carriers across Canada, from tiny Cochrane Telecom, Dryden Mobility and Latitude Wireless (bet you never heard of them) to the big heavyweights (you know who they are).

"Our proprietary tools filter, correct and aggregate raw technical antenna data from Industry Canada and select carriers, and generate antenna and site records, which you can explore and view on our cell tower map. We also use these tools to generate custom ad-hoc reports that help businesses and organizations make sense of the complex and growing Canadian cellular landscape.

This Loxcel cell tower map has a number of features to make it "user friendly":

  • It is community-driven with no advertisements
  • It works with "smartphones"
  • It works even with slow internet connections
  • It works with older PC's
  • It is less cluttered

Wireless Antenna Siting Forum

Facts and Suggested Panel Questions for the UBCM Conference- September, 2012

This handout is designed to brief and update municipal government mayors and councillors attending the Union of BC Municipalities Conference (UBCM) about the concerning issues related to the siting of wireless antennas in their own communities.

N.B. "Under federal regulations, cellphone companies must notify the municipality for towers at least 15 metres high, but many new installations are coming up short of the limit, at just 14.9 metres. Homeowners say the rule undermines their ability to weigh in on installations in the community . . ."

Grandmother gains fresh perspective from out-of-towner

Wendy Walks for ES - Ontario Canada

"A perfect stranger was so inspired when she learned of Port Frank's favourite grandmother that she got in her car and drove 1654km to meet Ms. Hoy. Jennifer arrived, having driven from West Virginia, USA. An electro-sensitive since 1996, she had lived in her car for seven years before finding a home in Greenbank, West Virginia. What makes her home town beneficial to ES people is the regulation prohibiting Wi-fi and Cell Towers within a 21 km radius of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO).

"While walking somewhere near Ailsa Craig, Ms. Hoy shared her desire to have Port Franksdesignated a "Safe Sanctuary for Electro-sensitive People" by walking to Ottawa. "ES Refugees get no support and often lose hope, being too sick to advocate for themselves. I like to think that Canadians care but I'm afraid we are on the verge of a possible health crisis . . .

Can you help Wendy? TEMPLATE FOR SUPPORT

The walk is over, but the issue remains . . .

BACKGROUND

September 21, 2012

"There has been very limited time for planning Wendy's walk as two large cellphone towers are being planned for the area near her home and one has just been built. This area includes the famous Pinery Provincial Park http://www.pinerypark.on.ca/ (Pinery Provincial Park contains much of the remaining Oak Savanna woodland to be found in North America. Explore this unique ecosystem, along park roads, trails, beaches or quiet reaches of the Old Ausable Channel).

"Radiation from the Cell Towers risks significant environmental damage to the park ecosystem and will expose a large part of the beautiful South Coast of Lake Huron and its famous sandy beaches with powerful and harmful microwave radiation.

"Wendy, who has taken a month off work for the epic walk, could do with lots of assistance over the next four weeks. Her route is not set in stone, but in general it is likely to include London, Brantford, Hamilton, Oakville, Mississauga, Toronto, Oshawa, Peterborough, Kingston, Smiths Falls and Ottawa. Other side trips may be included to meet people and groups in other locations.

Wendy has not sought help, but here are some ways that you may wish to offer assistance:

* Accommodation
* Food and refreshments
* Donation towards costs or charity
* Encouragement
* Assistance with driving in your area
* Company while walking
* Press and public notification etc
* Arrange a public information meeting
* Banners and flyers
* Use of a recreational vehicle during the walk

If you wish to help Wendy with this important initiative, please get in touch with:

Fire Fighters Cell Phone Mast Report

Position on the Health Effects from Radio Frequency/Microwave (RF/MW) Radiation in Fire Department Facilities from Base Stations for Antennas and Towers for the Conduction of Cell Phone Transmissions

"The International Association of Fire Fighters' position on locating cell towers commercial wireless infrastructure on fire department facilities, as adopted by its membership in August 2004 (1), is that the IAFF oppose the use of fire stations as base stations for towers and/or antennas for the conduction of cell phone transmissions until a study with the highest scientific merit and integrity on health effects of exposure to low-intensity RF/MW radiation is conducted and it is proven that such sitings are not hazardous to the health of our members.

"Further, the IAFF is investigating funding for a U.S. and Canadian study that would characterize exposures from RF/MW radiation in fire houses with and without cellular antennae, and examine the health status of the fire fighters as a function of their assignment in exposed or unexposed fire houses. Specifically, there is concern for the effects of radio frequency radiation on the central nervous system (CNS) and the immune system, as well as other metabolic effects observed in preliminary studies.

"It is the belief of some international governments and regulatory bodies and of the wireless telecommunications industry that no consistent increases in health risk exist from exposure to RF/MW radiation unless the intensity of the radiation is sufficient to heat body tissue. However, it is important to note that these positions are based on non-continuous exposures to the general public to low intensity RF/MW radiation emitted from wireless telecommunications base stations. Furthermore, most studies that are the basis of this position are at least five years old and generally look at the safety of the phone itself. IAFF members are concerned about the effects of living directly under these antenna base stations for a considerable stationary period of time and on a daily basis. There are established biological effects from exposure to low-level RF/MW radiation. Such biological effects are recognized as markers of adverse health effects when they arise from exposure to toxic chemicals for example. The IAFF's efforts will attempt to establish whether there is a correlation between such biological effects and a health risk to fire fighters and emergency medical personnel due to the siting of cell phone antennas and base stations at fire stations and facilities where they work . . .
