Replication of heart rate variability provocation study

2.4-GHz cordless phone confirms original findings - Havas and Marrongelle, June, 2013

Keywords: heart rate variability, mobile phone, tachycardia, arrhythmia, microwave radiation, radio frequency radiation, electrohypersensitivity, autonomic nervous system

Conclusion:

"Our results show that a considerable percentage of the individuals tested were moderately sensitive to very sensitive to radiation generated by a cordless phone based on HRV, and that their reactions were not psychosomatic. In this double- blind, sham-controlled study, we document an increased HR, altered HRV and changes in the sympathetic and parasympathetic control of the ANS similar to our previous study. The results are not due to EMI, since we have examples of a delayed response after the radiation was turned off and have tested EMI with much higher exposure using the same technology with no reactions noted. Our results demonstrate that the radiation from a 2.4-GHz cordless phone affects the ANS and may put some individuals with preexisting heart conditions at risk when exposed to electromagnetic frequencies to which they are sensitive. Although documenting a response is relatively simple, determining the degree of EHS is quite complex and requires further study."

Press release sent to every MP and BC MLA re Osoyoos Band Prohibition

Re: Osoyoos Indian Band Council's response to FortisBC's intent to install "Advanced Meters" (aka Smart Meters)

Our elected officials must take notice of the Osoyoos Band Prohibition of smart meters. We deserve the same right to protect our homes and families.

"Last week, the Council of the Osoyoos Indian Band of British Columbia, under the leadership of Chief Clarence Louie, voted unanimously to prohibit any smart meters from being installed on their land. The Council made this historic decision after having reviewed scientific evidence from hundreds of independent scientists showing harm to humans and to the environment from prolonged exposure to RF/microwave radiation emitted by wireless technology.

The reason for this momentous decision is that over the last 2 years, utility companies across Canada have begun to replace reliable, safe electro-mechanical analog meters with wireless transmitters called "smart meters" to measure electrical usage. In most cases this is being done without public notification, or regard for the many problems experienced in other jurisdictions around the world. Neither have they considered the safer wired alternatives that exist that would eliminate some of the problems, which include:

  1. unjustified increases in bills which are forcing many to choose between heating and food;
  2. invasion of privacy through gathering and wirelessly transmitting of personal data not needed for billing purposes:
  3. inability to secure the grid, resulting in significant potential for cyber-attack or accident, as many experts predict;
  4. lack of benefits (no cost or energy reductions);
  5. fires due to shoddy installations or design flaws due to the cheap construction;
  6. increase of radiofrequency (RF) and microwave radiation in the environment from the meters themselves and the supporting grid which relies on cell transmitters;
  7. most important, an exposure to RF radiation in one's home without choice, forewarning, or even full disclosure.
Unlike the Osoyoos Band which has control of its own health and security, the non-Indian residents of British Columbia and Canada are dependent upon their political representatives to make the right decision - to protect them, their families and the environment.

We are hopeful that you will see the wisdom in Chief Louie's and the Council's decision and call a halt to this dangerous, invasive program until a truly independent investigation confirms its necessity and safety.

Should you wish to have more information regarding this topic, please let me know.
Respectfully, Sharon Noble Director,
Coalition to Stop Smart Meters Victoria,

Federal Wi-Fi panel criticized for undisclosed conflict

Canadian Medical Association Journal says professor on panel had been hired to work for Industry Canada.

"The Royal Society of Canada will reconsider its decision to appoint a University of Ottawa professor to chair a panel that will assess the safety of radiowave-emitting devices such as cellular phones, following a CMAJ investigation that reveals a potential conflict-of-interest.

"The society's decision comes after CMAJ informed it that Daniel Krewski, who is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, Ontario and Director of the R. Samuel McLaughlin Centre, failed to disclose to the society that he had a "$126 000 contract in 2008-2009 from Industry Canada. According to the Merx public tender document, Krewski's contract was to "assist in addressing what the Department believes is opposition often based on misperception and misinformation" with respect to cellphone antennas.

"In an interview with CMAJ, Krewski confirmed that he held this contract and that he had not specifically disclosed it to the society.

"After being informed about the contract and Krewski's admission that he had failed to disclose it, Geoffrey Flynn, who chairs the society's Committee on Expert Panels and its Scientific Advisory Committee, told CMAJ he would "take it back to the panels" to reconsider the choice of Krewski as chair.

"I don't think there's anything nefarious in it that he didn't disclose it," Flynn says. "The most positive view is that [Krewski] is so busy he overlooked it." . . .

Doctor's Information Package

Addressed to Medical Professionals. Useful to all. Updated June 18, 2013

The following package is for those who wish to approach their doctors with information regarding the possible health risks from non-thermal microwave radiation.  It contains links organized into specific health effect categories.  These links can be printed out according to personal areas of need or concern, and used to start a dialogue with doctors who may not as yet have associated certain health conditions with EMF or RF exposure.

The introductory letter on pages 1 and 2 contains a link to the entire list, and may be useful to your doctor as a reference tool.

"Dear Medical Professional:

"Your patient has asked us for support in providing you with information regarding the possible health risks from non-thermal microwave radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation, recently reclassified by the WHO/IARC as a Class 2B, possible human carcinogen.

"This WHO risk category also includes lead, DDT, chloroform, and dioxane, and is relevant to all wireless devices emitting radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, including cordless phones, cell phones, IPads, Wi-Fi routers, wireless games, baby monitors, and smart meters . . .

"Many doctors have already given medical advice to their patients by way of a medical letter or note on a prescription form stating that the patient should avoid, for medical reasons, living in a residence or residential complex at which a wireless meter is operating in order to maintain their health or avoid aggravating a medical condition. This medical advice stating the health condition and advising the patient that they should avoid ongoing exposure to wireless radiofrequency and smart meter emissions will allow your patient to participate in the Human Rights Action currently underway. We are hopeful that the individual's right to protect their health as advised by their medical doctor will be upheld by the Human Rights Tribunal, and this forced exposure within their own home to undesirable microwave radiofrequency emissions will be replaced with reasonable and respectful accommodation by BC Hydro . . . "

Information categories contained in this package:

One of the most respected chiefs in British Columbia, Chief Clarence Louie, and his Osoyoos Indian Band Council have voted unanimously to ban smart meters from their land.

Penticton News Report
Press Release Sent to MPs and MLA's

FortisBC may not be able to install its proposed smart meters on the Osoyoos Indian Reserve.

The Osoyoos Indian Band is taking a stand against smart meters as its council members have signed a governing document that prohibits FortisBC from installing its smart meters on approximately 703 homes and businesses on the reserve.

According to Chief Clarence Louie, the band believes the smart meters could potentially harm the environment and the children on the reserve.

"No scientist on the planet has been able verify the safety of these extremely dangerous devices that emit microwave radiation 24/7 in perpetuity and cannot be turned off," says Louie.

However, FortisBC spokesperson Neal Pobran says Health Canada and British Columbia's Health Officer do not consider smart meters to be a threat.

"We've got a graph that shows where advanced meters kind of relate to other common household electronic items such as wifi, baby monitors, cell phones," says Pobran. "For instance, a cell phone is almost 17,000 times greater than what a smart meter emits for radio frequency emissions, so it's considerably lower than most of the electronic household items that we have."

Pobran adds that FortisBC is still waiting for the conclusion of a public hearing and decision from the B.C. Utilities Commission on whether it can proceed with installing smart meters anywhere, which he estimates will take place at the end of summer.

You really are addicted to your cellphone

Dr. Devra Davis - An expert explains why we're only beginning to understand the technology's myriad health risks

"Devra Davis:

"The example in the 1990s . . . University of Washington researchers] Henry Lai and Narendra N.P. Singh found significant evidence of DNA damage caused by cellphone light radiation comparable almost to the damage you would get from X-rays, which is ionizing. At the time, it was generally believed by some people that non-ionizing radiation, which comes from a cellphone, could not possibly be physically damaging because it was so weak.

"Well, it's true that non-ionizing radiation lacks the power to have damage. But its damage seems to come from its modulated signal. So every 900 milliseconds, if you have a cellphone in your pocket, it's getting half of that radiation which is getting into you as it seeks the signal from the tower.

"So the industry understood this could be of enormous consequences, so they did three things. First, they wrote to the university and tried to get the scientists fired for violating the rules of the contract that they were working under at the time. They then wrote to NIH [National Institutes of Health]--and all of this has been documented in my book and there's been no lawsuits filed about any of the statements I'm making to you--and they accused the scientists of fraud for misusing funds to do the study. Then, when that didn't work they actually had somebody meet with the journal editors to try to get the article accepted for publication unaccepted . . .

"In case all of that wasn't enough, as the coup de grace, a memo was written from Motorola to its PR firm saying we think we sufficiently "war-gamed" the science. [Direct quote from the 1994 memo: "I think we have sufficiently war-gamed the Lai-Singh issue..."] . . .

WHY DO WE NEED ANOTHER FORM? (No-Fee Opt Out Registration Notice)

For anyone, WITH or WITHOUT a smart meter (Updated June 15, 2013)

Please take the time to fill in and send this No-Fee Opt Out Registration Notice, and to ask your friends and colleagues to do the same.

WHY DO WE NEED ANOTHER FORM ?

** Accurate Information - this form allows CST and the Coalition to collect new information and create a database of people forced to take smart meters despite refusals, and the types of tactics used against them. These people will be the first contacted with details of the Civil Class Action Lawsuit against BC Hydro and given the choice to participate.

** Political Pressure - keeps the Smart Meter fiasco front and centre at sensitive election time. It will show that the government and Hydro are misrepresenting the numbers of people who do not want smart meters.

** Stop the Grid - when the majority of citizens demand and receive no-fee opt out, those forcing the "Smart Grid" will have to be "re-educated" to come up with another solution that is truly designed to conserve energy and environment.
