Dirty Electricity and Disease

Dr. Sam Milham M.D. M.P.H. was the first scientist to alert the world to the dangers of dirty electricity. In his book Dirty Electricity: Electrification and the Diseases of Civilization, he explains the link between electromagnetic field exposure and the rise of suicide rates and epidemic diseases like cancer and diabetes. Dr. Milham joins us to discuss the deleterious health effects of our current electrical system and the rapid proliferation of cellular and wifi technology. We will explore the first and second waves of illnesses from electrification, the evidence that residential electrification caused a spike in childhood leukemia, the low occurrence of cancer in Amish communities, the underbelly of wind and solar as they relate to dirty electricity, and other startling discoveries about long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields.

"Electricity supply systems, electrical appliances and a wide range of transmitters for various wireless applications generate non-ionising radiation (commonly referred to as "electrosmog")  that can be harmful to our health, depending on its intensity. With its Ordinance relating to Protection from Non-Ionising Radiation, the Federal Council introduced a legal instrument to protect the population against the harmful effects of electrosmog. 

"This brochure describes the main sources of electrosmog, assesses the associated risks, identifies existing gaps in research and suggests ways in which we can reduce our own level of exposure."

Science can be a battleground -- witness the politics of climate change, the teaching of evolution, the uncharted terrain of genetic modification and stem cell research, among other contentious issues. But when industries release untested chemicals into our environment -- putting profits before public health -- our children are the first to suffer. Nowhere is this more troubling than in the ongoing story of lead poisoning.

Bill talks with David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz, public health historians who've been taking on the chemical industry for years -- writing about the hazards of industrial pollution and the neglect of worker safety -- despite industry efforts to undermine them. Their latest book, Lead Wars: The Politics of Science and the Fate of America's Children, is the culmination of 20 years of research. Markowitz and Rosner warn that, for young children, there's no safe level of exposure to this dangerous toxin still lurking in millions of homes.

The authors discuss thwarted efforts to hold the lead industry accountable, failed attempts to find cheap solutions, and the cost to the future of our children. As long as the chemical industry and its powerful lobbies prevail in blocking efforts to reform outdated laws, Markowitz and Rosner say, we will continue to float in a soup of toxins -- inhaling, drinking, and absorbing chemicals that we may learn, years later, have put us all in harm's way.

This Resolution is another very important document addressing pulsed, short, strong spikes like those emitted by the 'smart' transmitters being put on our homes and businesses.

Scientists keep issuing warnings to governments, but in BC and elsewhere, most of our leaders, Public Health Officers and Centres for Disease Control have been unwilling to listen.

To raise public awareness, this information needs to be given to every government official, and election candidate, and handed out in flyers. 

The international congress "Radar, radiofrequency and health risk" was held on April 20th, 2013 in Potenza Picena, Macerata, Italy.  There are several scientific findings regarding the radar placed in Potenza Picena:

• an alteration of the cell viability in cultured cells exposed to the radar signal under controlled conditions (in a Tem cell), with the activation of apoptosis in a short term exposure and with an activation of cell survival signals for 48-hours exposures; 

• the cells cultured in the houses of Potenza Picena under the radar signal exposure showed the same alterations of in vitro studies; 

• the methylation of DNA occurred to such exposed cultured cells, that may be responsible of a genetic damage on a long term even for low dose exposures; 

• the epidemiology study for the period 1986-1991 shows a significant increase of tumor risk (1.6) and of stroke risk (1.4). 

Given the previous evidences, the following signatories are morally engaged to declare that the radar in Potenza Picena cannot be defined as "safe" for the population and it should switched off or removed.

" . . . Frequent television viewing appears to lead to a significant retardation of the development of comprehension, a negative effect compounded by simultaneous passive smoking. In addition, certain visual perceptive abilities - and related cognitive development - appear to atrophy or be hindered by frequent television viewing and/or excessive videogame playing. The two medical doctors came to the conclusion that the rapid succession of images on the TV screen disrupts the child's perceptive ability to behold or view with attention; as a result, the development of an inner picturing process is prevented. The children are unable to inwardly picture (or "grasp") reality. . . .

On March 14, Industry Minister Christian Paradis unveiled the rules for the federal government's wireless spectrum auction, which will allow Canada's telecommunications companies to bid on some prime new electromagnetic real estate.

On the auction block in early 2013 will be the 700-MHz band, which was freed up by the switch to digital television. Lower frequencies are generally more valuable than higher ones, since they travel farther and easily penetrate buildings. This makes 700 MHz a blue-chip frequency that should allow cellphones to work in elevators and underground garages, while supporting the newest wireless high-speed technology, LTE. The auction could generate $3.5 billion in revenue--and that may be conservative, given that the 2008 auction brought in $4.3 billion, far exceeding expectations.

Wireless devices and household appliances may impact fetal development, changing endocrine and metabolic systems, according to a large study by Kaiser Permanente.

"OAKLAND, Calif. -- In-utero exposure to relatively high magnetic field levels was associated with a 69 percent increased risk of being obese or overweight during childhood compared to lower in-utero magnetic field levels, according to a Kaiser Permanente study that appears in the current online version of Nature's Scientific Reports.

"Researchers conducted the prospective cohort study, in which participating women in Kaiser Permanente's Northern California region carried a meter measuring magnetic field levels during pregnancy and 733 of their children were followed up to 13 years, to collect clinically recorded information on growth patterns. On average, 33 weight measurements per child were collected.

"Researchers noted a dose response relationship with increasing in-utero magnetic field levels being associated with further increased risk of obesity or being overweight. The observed association and supporting evidence provide the first epidemiologic findings that link increasing exposure to environmental magnetic fields, especially in-utero exposure, over the last few decades with the rapid rise in childhood obesity during the corresponding decades, according to the authors. . . .

"Alaska Airlines said an unspecified illness caused one of its pilots to lose consciousness while flying a Boeing 737-700, leading the copilot to declare an emergency. While the aircraft was at cruising altitude, the pilot - with 28 years of experience - stood up, became dizzy, lost consciousness and fell to the floor. There was a similar fainting episode on January 22, also on an Alaska Airlines aircraft. In that case, the copilot briefly lost consciousness in flight. In both cases, the pilots held current medical certificates. There could be several contributing factors. Evidently, all these Alaska Airlines jets are WiFi-enabled. Potential adverse effects from this exposure can include nausea, vertigo and fainting. Was this a contributing factor?"
